Retrofit
A robot retrofit modernises a mechanically sound arm with a new controller, drives, or safety system, restoring spare parts and support without a new machine.
A retrofit upgrades an in-service robot by replacing ageing components — most often the controller and drives, sometimes motors, cabling, or safety systems — while keeping the mechanically sound arm. It modernises the system without the cost of a full replacement.
Retrofitting brings obsolete robots back to a supportable state: a current controller restores spare-parts availability, modern fieldbuses, and safety compliance. It is common where the mechanical arm still meets spec but the electronics are end-of-life.
When evaluating an older used robot, consider whether a controller retrofit is available and economic versus buying a newer complete unit. A retrofit can be the cheapest path to a long, supportable service life.
