Pick-and-Place

Pick-and-place is the robotic task of grasping a part at one location and placing it at another. SCARA and delta robots dominate this high-speed automation job.

Pick-and-place describes a robot grasping a workpiece at a source location and depositing it at a destination — feeding machines, packing products, loading trays, or sorting. It is the highest-volume robotic application by installed count.

Speed and repeatability dominate pick-and-place. SCARA and delta robots are purpose-built for it; vision systems let robots locate randomly placed or moving parts on conveyors (vision-guided pick-and-place).

When sourcing a used robot for pick-and-place, match payload to the part-plus-gripper weight and validate cycle time at the required rate. Consistent part presentation is as important as the robot itself.
